Aggies were measured, timed and tested by NFL scouts Wednesday at the NMSU pro day. Scouts from five different teams (Cardinals, Giants, Bills, Packers and Chargers) and one from the semi-professional team in El Paso (Generals) attended.
A total of 10 Aggies participated in Pro Day events, along with the 40-yard dash, players ran shuttle drills, bench-pressed 225 pounds and performed in various position drills.
Aggie defensive back and NCAA tackle leader Derrick Richardson was one of the players trying to improve his NFL hopes.
"I don't care if I have to play quarterback, lineman or kicker I will do anything to get on a team,"
Richardson said. "Although, I would have liked to run faster in the 40 (yard dash), I met my range."
Other seniors who impressed scouts in addition to Richardson were Chris Williams and Polo Gutierrez. Williams led the group in the broad jump, vertical leap and 40-yard dash time. While Williams impressed with his feet, Gutierrez opened some eyes with his bench press total.
Williams said he was satisfied with his performance.
"I hope it says a lot about me. I hope I can get into a mini-camp and make a team,"
Williams said.
Although Williams was content, he did mention he was surprised by one drill in particular the scouts asked them to perform.
"I didn't expect the scouts to ask us to run the 60-yard shuttle,"
Williams said.
Gutierrez was also pleased with his performance, hoping it was good enough to get a call back. Gutierrez explained after the NFL Draft in late April, many players get invited to tryout. Gutierriez said.
"For o-lineman and d-lineman, teams put us in pads to see if we can block or shed blocks,"
Gutierrez said.
Chase Holbrook was present but chose not to work out, using his 40-yard dash time (5.08) and broad jump (9 feet) from the NFL combine. However, he did throw for the scouts in some individual-based drills
