New Mexico State Athletics Director McKinley Boston said the search for a new football coach continues as normal and he hopes to have six to eight finalists soon.
"The search is going well, we're trying to set up interviews and the interest has been good for the head job,"
Boston said.
The Aggies are looking for a new coach to replace Hal Mumme, who was dismissed last week after four years on the job.
New Mexico State is the second school in the Western Athletic Conference looking for a new coach. Utah State hired Utah defensive coordinator Gary Anderson last week.
New Mexico State is looking to end its bowl drought that dates back to 1960.
A source told the Sun-News last week that UCLA defensive coordinator DeWayne Walker had interviewed for the job and it is believed that Walker is still in the running for the position, although he is reportedly a candidate for the head coaching position at San Diego State as well.
A source said on Thursday that Pittsburgh Steelers running backs coach Kirby Wilson, Nebraska recruiting coordinator and receivers coach Ted Gilmore and Oklahoma offensive assistant Jay Norvell are still on the NMSU's radar as well.

Mumme's lawyer Russ Campbell said Thursday that progress is being made on the buyout between the school and the former Aggie coach.
The reported figure is $385,000, which Boston said would come from private funds.

Former New Mexico State quarterback Chase Holbrook will likely play in the Third Annual Texas vs. The Nation All-Star football game in El Paso on Jan. 31 at the Sun Bowl.
Holbrook was a three-year starter for New Mexico State and threw for 3,361 yards in his senior season.

A source has informed the Sun-News that wide receiver LaVorick Williams has contacted West Texas A&M in terms of a possible transfer. Williams has reportedly asked for his release from NMSU, although he could stay at NMSU depending on the who the new coach is.

Las Cruces High quarterback Dante Caro got his first offer recently from New Mexico State, while Bulldawgs running back James Hall Jr. has received offers from NMSU, Army and Air Force. Now it appears that both could be receiving interest from Wyoming.
The connection? Wyoming just hired former NMSU defensive line coach Mike Fanoga to be its outside linebackers coach.
