Davon House had to make a correction.
When asked how he felt about his "last game," he threw out a retort.
"Last game here," he stated bluntly.
In other words, he plans on continuing his football career after this Saturday, when the New Mexico State Aggies host the University of Hawaii at 1 p.m.
For House, a four-year starting cornerback for the Aggies, it won't be easy ending what has been a productive college career at NMSU.
"Hopefully it's not going to be too emotional," he said. "You still gotta go through the game, 60 minutes, four quarters. In the back of my mind, I'm going to keep thinking that this is my last game here. In front of my fans, in front of my family and my teammates."
House, who was recruited by the Aggies from Palmdale, Calif., and had to earn a scholarship prior to his freshman season during fall training camp, has been one of the team's great playmakers.
His 10 career interceptions is tied for eighth all time on the Aggie career list with Donald Stowers (1990-93). Abelardo Alba and Hartwell Menafee are tied for first with 16 career picks.
House's 271 career interception-return yards rank No. 1 in the NMSU record books, and he's scored three career touchdowns.
"That would be my first one, actually my first interception," House said when asked about his most memorable play. "It was against Idaho, freshman year, my first start. Back of the endzone and they threw it. I didn't know what to do so I just started running and I found a crease and I scored. That was the game my dad came too, also. He told me he wasn't coming to no games until I started a game. And that's the game I started."
While House hopes to come away with a win today, he could also be an NFL prospect.
House will play in the Senior Bowl on Jan. 30 — a showcase for possible NFL draftees — and will look to perform in front of scouts during the offseason.
"I think a lot of it is going to have to do with the combines and how he does in his private workouts," NMSU head coach DeWayne Walker said. "Is he a first-day guy? I think he's gonna have to have some really good workouts. I think....He'll be a second-day guy. He can go anywhere from third-round to free agent."
House said he's focused on playing good football, and going out on a winning note today.
"I found a new family, it's a second home now," House said. "After Saturday I will become an alumni. I will always call and check up on scores and see how the Aggies are doing. Regardless of what the score is and our record, I'm an Aggie for life and I'll represent to the fullest."
