McDermott and Williams to Transfer from NMSU
New Mexico State head football coach DeWayne Walker announced Monday afternoon that quarterback J.J. McDermott and wide receiver LaVorick Williams have decided to transfer from NMSU and pursue their football career’s at other institutions. McDermott will transfer to Southern Methodist University, while Williams will transfer to Texas Tech University to run track & field.
“I spoke with both players and discussed the opportunities for them here at NMSU,” Walker said. “Unfortunately both felt that transferring was in their best interest. We wish them all the success in the future.”
McDermott was the Aggies’ backup quarterback the past two seasons behind Chase Holbrook. In 2008, McDermott played in four games for the Aggies. On the season, McDermott recorded 246 passing on 20-of-34 and one interception. Against Nebraska (9/13) he tallied 83 yards through the air on 4-of-8 passing. Versus Alcorn State, McDermott went 6-of-9 for 81 yards passing. He recorded 43 yards passing against San Jose State (10/18) and 39 yards passing versus Boise State (11/1).
Williams played in nine games for the Aggies at wide receiver and as a kickoff returner. He tallied 52 yards receiving on the season on seven catches. Against Alcorn State (10/4) Williams caught three passes for a season-high 45 yards and had two kick returns for 37 yards. Versus San Jose State (10/18) he record one catch for nine yards.
